Fossil fuel cars are being phased out. Electric vehicles are growing in popularity as battery range increases, and government subsidies have made them an increasingly attractive alternative to petrol and diesel cars. Fleet sales are rising. (Amazon, UPS and the Post Office are switching to e-vans.) There are 30,000 public (destination) charge points available for EV drivers in the UK, located in motorway service areas, supermarket, pub and other car parks, and the number is going up by an average of 700 units each month. However, developers are not installing charge points outside new homes which should be done routinely. With several thousand houses in some developments, the economies of scale would make this an achievable prospect.
A new development is Vehicle to Grid. Thisallows electric vehicle (EV) batteries to store energy and discharge it back to the electricity network when it's most needed – for instance at peak times of the day when usage across the UK is at its highest. Again the infrastructure needs to be installed in new developments to make this a workable reality.
E-bikes are also surging in numbers and secure bike parks need to be created to decrease theft, especially for houses without garages. Cycle paths ought to be automatically added to new developments.
