Mitigating climate change, by substantially lowering 29% of UK carbon emissions, could be achieved by improving renewable energy provision for all domestic properties (both new, and retro-fitting for old). However:
Prime Minister David Cameron dumped carbon zero building regulations in 2015 after complaints from the larger developers and suggestions that financial support would be withheld.
Building regulations are lax and allow developers to pay lip to service climate change, while making no provision for energy generation in the lifetime of their properties.
We have examined hundreds of developments, and the results are appalling. We have searched unsuccessfully for evidence of:
Solar PV, heat pumps, wind turbines EV charging infrastructure, bike lanes and bike secure storage Rainwater harvesting, sewage management, reed beds
(Insulation, LED lighting, "A" rated appliances and dual flush loos are standard and make zero difference to energy generation.
A wide-ranging and comprehensive report, UK Housing Fit for the Future was issued in 2019, written by a group headed by Lord Deben (John Gummer). https://www.theccc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/UK-housing-Fit-for-the-future-CCC-2019.pdf. They state quite clearly that new homes should not be connected to the gas grid by 2025 at the latest. ALL THE DEVELOPERS are still installing gas combi boilers. No action appears to have been taken so far on any of the recommendations. See this one paragraph about building regulations.
